Swimbaits and Crankbaits- Slow Straight retrieve, occasionally doing Stop and Go if the water depth requires it, or if I'm trying to maximize the amount of time I keep my lure in the water (like for short casts). The most reliable retrieve for me by far, and hooksets happen automatically. Constant, slow retrieve with regular L2 twitches every half second to 1 second. Spoons, Jigs, Bass Jigs and Jerkbaits of all types- Twitching retrieve. Very rarely I'll Twitch retrieve, just to mix things up. Whatever prevents the lure from prematurely becoming a topwater lure, with the exception of the Buzzbait, which I use as a topwater lure, with a straight retrieve. Spinners, Spinnerbaits, and Buzzbaits- Straight Retrieve, at low/medium speed, depending on my gear. Same method as Popping, however I typically tap L2 more often. I get a steady 2 dots from this method, and I usually don't have to even make an effort to set the Hook, with the popping interval doing it for me. Lowest speed, constant retrieve, tapping the set button (L2 on Playstation) every 2 seconds or so to Pop the lure. You don't need to stop for the fish to bite.ĭepending on the lures, I like these retrieves. Constant retrieve techniques such as Twitching, will ensure reliable hooksets, and the fish will chase the lure. I also typically only lure fish, and I tend to avoid Stop N Go, and Lift N Drop techniques, simply because they have a tendency to slack the line enough to make hits difficult to detect sometimes. You will occasionally get "miss strikes" or "bumps", but a solid bite will cause your tension meters to pop up noticeably, at which point you can set the hook.

I always set the hook once the fish takes the lure.
